
Suraya A. Afiff

Suraya Afiff, Ph.D. memperoleh gelar sarjana dari Jurusan Biologi Fakultas Matematika dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam (FMIPA) UI pada tahun 1985. Ia memperoleh gelar magister dari Marine Affairs and Policy (RSMAS) di University of Miami pada tahun 1996 dan gelar doktor diperoleh dari Environmental Science Policy and Management (ESPM) fokus pada Society and Environment di University of California at Berkeley pada tahun 2004. Kegiatan akademiknya antara lain menjadi Visiting Lecture di Southeast Asian Studies, Jackson School of International Studies, University of Washington, Seattle (2010 dan 2012), Visiting scholar di Comparative Development and Cultural Studies Southeast Asia, University of Passau (2016), Senior Visiting Scholar di Asia Institute, University of Melbourne (2018 -2020). Sejak 2020, menjadi Senior Research Fellow di Asia Research Institute (ARC) FISIP UI. Untuk kegiatan riset kolaboratif yang baru selesai dan sedang berjalan: Co-PI NSF riset project tentang “Labor Migration and Effects of Remittances and Commodity Enclosures on Industrial Agriculture and Forest Landscapes” kerjasama dengan professor Nancy Peluso dari UC Berkeley (2017-2023); PI kolaborasi riset Southeast Asia – Europe Joint Funding Scheme dengan profesor Murat Arsel dari International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) – Erasmus University tentang “Resilience and Adaptation to Sea level rise in Jakarta Bay: Sink or Swim together? (2018-2019; 2024-2025). Selain itu terlibat sebagai Internasional Editorial Board dari Journal of Peasant Studies, jurnal Suomen Antropologi; dan jurnal Environment and Planning E: Nature and Space. Sebelum menjadi pengajar, ia aktif di sekretariat nasional Wahana Lingkungan Hidup Indonesia (WALHI) antara 1988 hingga 1994. Kini aktif sebagai board dan fellow Samdhana Institute; anggota perkumpulan KARSA Institute dan Conflict Resolution Unit (CRU) Indonesia.
