The DigSmart Project is a collaborative research initiative designed to address Indonesia’s waste management crisis amidst the growing momentum of smart city agendas and the green transition. This interdisciplinary effort brings together researchers, government partners, civil society organizations, environmental journalists, and digital developers across diverse socio-geographical case studies.

Driven by rising greenhouse gas emissions and projected increases in waste volume due to population and income growth, the project examines how digital waste management is conceptualized, developed, and implemented. It critically explores the social, economic, and ecological implications of these shifts, particularly for vulnerable groups such as informal waste pickers.

The ultimate goal is to provide policy recommendations that foster a socially and environmentally just green transition by integrating digital technology into a circular economy framework. Combining rigorous research with capacity building and public dissemination—through workshops, exhibitions, documentaries, and academic publications—DigSmart aims to facilitate a more inclusive and sustainable transformation in waste management practices.
