NABUN (No-Burn) is an anthropological research project examining household waste management practices across the Jabodetabek metropolitan area. The study specifically focuses on the persistence of backyard burning—an informal strategy that remains widespread despite legal prohibitions.

The project seeks to uncover how communities perceive waste and how they navigate the complexities of sorting and disposal. It further explores how social dynamics, economic factors, and gender roles intersect to shape these everyday practices. Through ethnographic fieldwork in South Jakarta, Depok, and Bogor, NABUN combines qualitative insights with policy analysis. Our goal is to provide a nuanced understanding and actionable recommendations for developing urban waste systems that are both inclusive and equitable.
