Public Discussion on Sagea

By April 15, 2026No Comments1 min read

This public discussion featured Supriyadi Sudirman, representing the Save Sagea movement, in a shared learning space that explored the struggle of the Sagea community in Weda Bay, Central Halmahera, as they face the expansion of the nickel industry. The event became part of a broader critical conversation involving students and academics to better understand the real impacts of extractive industries, from river pollution and the loss of livelihoods to the criminalization of residents defending their living space.

Starting from the local context of Sagea, the session highlighted how communities are placed on the front line of the larger energy transition narrative, one that often overlooks what is actually happening on the ground. Through participatory discussions and the sharing of community experiences, Save Sagea showed that resistance is built collectively, rooted in local cultural values, and sustained as an ongoing effort to protect dignity and the continuity of community life.
