The BERMAKNA Internship Program (Learning, Teaching, and Action)
The BERMAKNA Internship Program is a strategic initiative by the Undergraduate Program in Anthropology at Universitas Indonesia. Conducted in collaboration with Indonesian migrant learning centers (sanggar) in Malaysia, this program supports the Indonesian Embassy’s mission to provide protection and educational access for citizens abroad.
The program focuses on twelve learning centers across Peninsular Malaysia, which serve as vital alternative educational spaces for children from undocumented migrant families at risk of statelessness and exclusion from formal schooling. For approximately six weeks, interns engage in meaningful participation—an approach rooted in consistency, relational bonding, and ethical responsibility—serving as both mentors and educators.
BERMAKNA is designed to explore the complexities of education within the context of migration and legal precarity while addressing the urgent need for enhanced learning support at these centers. Utilizing a light, non-extractive ethnographic approach centered on reflection, participant observation, and dialogue, students produce ethnographic reports and social innovation blueprints. These outputs serve as valuable resources for the learning centers and the Embassy, while simultaneously strengthening experiential learning models within the academic curriculum.
